"hayek" oud on eBay
Hi folks, just thought I'd put up a warning here: this oud on ebay:
Hayek Oud - Ebay
Appears to be a fake. It looks to me like a Sukar oud (note binding, bridge, and neck nail) with an old rosette and pickguard. The label inside
reads Hayek, Aleppo 1920.
While it could be authentic, I am skeptical about this and advise caution.
Authentic Hayek Oud (fingerboard replaced):

You know that Sukkar's design is derived from Old Aleppo ouds. So the bridge and the decorated rim cannot say much, but if you mean the nail on the
neck that belongs to the adjustable action mechanism, then it is definately a fake.
By the way, if it was a fake, it is not Sukkar. He would NEVER do that. He doesn't need it. He is a person with principles.....truely.
You know that his ouds are being imitated now, could be one of those guys.
Ibrahim Sukkar is one of those who you can blindly trust. I am responsible for my statement.

don't worry Omar, no body is buying this for $4K +!
Well maybe one of his (ex)employees heavily repaired it to the point where maybe the only original thing left is the bowl. Because I am myself rather
familiar with Sukar ouds and that neck, the woods used especially on the binding are all very familiar. Maybe his shop repaired it and the seller is
not mentioning it with the hopes of getting more money?
I am sure its not Ibrahim Sukar himself selling it on ebay. Also this person strangely put a picture of Om Kalthoum with Kasabgy holding a oud which
looks nothing like it. maybe insinuating that Kasabgy owned this oud before.

Sorry if there was some confusion, I didn't mean to imply that Sukar had anything to do with this. As you say, it could be an imitator. Or the
seller or someone else could have come up with it, as Samir said. I don't think Sukar has any interested in forgeries.

Don't worry Brian. I'm am sure you didn't mean anything bad regarding Sukkar's credibility.
It is just to clarify to those how do note know him well that many things could happen on his account and he has nothing to do with that as you also
mentioned.

Same seller here with another "antique" oud. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-Syrian-oud-/111626726121?pt=LH_Defa... I doubt anyone would bite, but should it be reported to eBay?

I don't know . . . it's not a clear enough forgery to justify reporting it, at least from my perspective. Maybe Alfaraby can chime in ...

Sorry dear for the delay. I'm a bit "out of tune" these days.
Every other supposed antique oud in the East nowadays is probably a replica, or at least a heavily restored wreck from the past; so you were
absolutely right bringing this issue to light.
George Hayek lived and worked in Aleppo/Syria in the early 1900's and was Aleppo's "answer"/competitor of the Nahhats from Damascus. He's deemed to be
the senior luthier who establishd the Aleppian oud as it reached us, whether it was his or his students/apprentices. Generally, his ouds were 13 ribs,
so were most of Aleppo's ouds. In order to be positive, I tend to believe the bowl is his, but maybe the SB, FB, pegbox were replaced sometime in the
past and maybe by Sukkar. It's not a secret that Sukkkar used to restore/repair old ouds, even after he became an impire . He used to do this for the challange and fun not in order to make a profit. This he
was doing anyway pretty well, without restoring antique ouds.
Here's a 100% authentic 1923 Hayek oud. Only the pegs were replaced.
Take a look
Yours indeed
Alfaraby
