Question about Farid's lowest string

Greetings. Was Farid's lowest (pitched) string that was sometimes tuned to 'E', sometimes 'F', etc., Was that a single string as is the one that is usually the lowest pitch on modern ouds or was it a course of two stings? I'm mostly curious if when he tuned to play different maquams, etc., if he had to tune one string or two. Thanks!

All the times I've heard him tune on a recording it's been two.

Always 2 strings, and usually tuned to F. Now, sometimes the lowest strings would be actually tuned to E-flat. This is because he would tune the oud down whole 1 step. I tuned my oud this way when trying to learn Kilmet Itab, before I knew about pitch adjusting software. I felt the oud sounded better that way and I've kept it like that since.

Lol, yes, but I wasn't in charge of the Farid website. That was Wassim Noujeim. Your name looks familiar too, been a looong time! That website was amazing at a time before Youtube and Facebook etc, nothing even came close to it. It's a big part of why this website got started.

Bingo. He did post a recording I made of the taqsim from "Enaya Mahma Allou Annak," concert. That taqsim is very famous, but it is often thought to be from Awal Hamsa. Probably because back in the 90s we just all assumed it was Awal Hamsa, called it that and it stuck. In fact it is still labeled Awal Hamsa on the Farido page of this site. But I eventually found the whole concert for it at Sama3y. You can also here it on youtube here, if you haven't. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzLA-rIvXD0
