What is all the rage about Mohamad Fadel Ouds?
I keep hearing people rave about these Ouds, but I don't really see the allure.
What's so special about them?

Well, it's not because of the treble clef in the sound hole. I think it's because of the sound.
for instance

The picture is rather blurry in this next video but I think this may be a Fadel oud.

the sound... having played a fixed bridge fadel oud, the sound was great. They are not the most beautiful looking but definitely they have that deep
Arabic yet punchy Arabic sound. Also like Sukar, I think there is a great degree of consistency to his ouds and he made tones.
but there are 2 types of Fadel ouds. fixed and floating bridge.
floating of course was popularized by Munir Bashir. But also the fixed type bridge ouds he was making became increasingly seen in the hands of popular
Arabian gulf singers.
Overtime, through word of mouth marketing and also the fact that he stopped making ouds increased the popularity/novelty of these ouds amongst the
circle of Arabic musicians.

guys, pls opinions,
Anyone ever seen this kind of rosette on a fadel oud? 1967. was it pre-clef de sol rosette or some clients didn't like the usual design and asked for
a different one (as I would have done)
haven't seen it in person yet the label looks right, the serial nbr too and most importantly the owner looks very right too..

Yes, the sound was usually good. The bowl is rather large, I mean wide, but shallow (shallow making up for the width).
Although the recording in the video posted by Jody is doctored a bit with reverb, and doesn't fully capture the true Fadel sound... which can also be
described as dry, but I actually like that feature in tonal quality.

Hi John. I guess you're referring to the reverb in the Oud Prof video. In the same message I also posted a link to a Rawhi Khamash video. the oud
sound is coming through a sound system but I don't hear any added reverb. There *is* the sound of the room I think. I'm told this was shot at the
funeral of Mohammed Fadel. Rawhi Khammash plays his own Hijazkar Kurd Sama'i.

Sorted out: it is a custom rosette with the name of the owner: Najib Aad who used to play with many Lebanese singers.
