Analog pre amp for oud

Dear friends,

my name is Michalis Cholevas and I am a Yayli Tanbur/Tarhu/Ney player performing with the Kudsi Erguner Ensemble among other groups. Furthermore, I am a teacher for Makam theory and main subject lessons at the turkish music department at the conservatory of Rotterdam.

The last few years I am part of a group of musicians collaborating with vintage-revolution.com , a company building Acoustic Box 2, a high quality analog preamp/blender for acoustic instruments.

The preamp came as a result of my own and other colleagues' challenges with sound on stage and many of us gave feedback to Vintage revolution on building Acoustic Box 2 so as to allow full control on the sound of instruments such as the oud, saz, tar, tanbur, yayli tanbur and others in order to avoid all possible problems a musician can face on stage.

Already musicians' Forums and Journals have given their independent reviews and I would like to ask if it would be interesting for some of you to have the box tried in the US/Canada and give your honest reviews to forum's users.

I am adding some links of forums and independent journal reviews on vintage revolution devices as well as the webpage so as to give you an idea:

If a group of friends in the forum are interested in trying it, the company can ship the preamp to the US for a few months.

In April 25 we will be performing at the Katara Oud Festival in Qatar and I will make a short video of the ABox used on Tarhu and Oud.

Kind wishes to all,

Michalis

Hello Michalis!

did you ever tried the Headway EDB1 preamp?

if yes, could you tell us what would be main differences? in term of sound?

thanks!

Hey There,

sorry for the late reply, but we were on tour with my group.

I think this is an unfair comparison. There is really a huge gap between the two units.

The EDB1 is in my opinion a preamp on the cheap side. The low quality of electronics, the tone control instead of parametric EQs and the lack of true +48 phantom power are just a few to start with. If you add to those the high quality preamps of the ABOX2, the filters, the 7 fully parametric controls, the Optical compressor, the amount of inputs and outputs and the dsp for a final touch on the sound with reverb or delay, you understand why I think those two are incomparable.

I think that a bit more fair would be to compare the AB2 with the grace design Felix model, although, in my opinion the AB2 has a far better sound than the Felix and many more features.

All the best,

M.

I'd love to try one ! If it makes the rounds to the SF Bay Area, please let me know. It looks very well constructed, and seems well thought out.
Thanks for posting, and best of luck.

Regards,
Paul
