Mood: Dude, where's my Oud?

Good find, never heard of him. This kind of Persian Oud style is very retro... I like it. A little rough around the edges... nice. Reminds me of Abdol Vahab Shahidi's playing.

This would have been recorded in the mid 1950s which is when Deben B was making field recordings in Iran. So maybe not exactly "retro". At the time it was "contemporary". Also the recording techniques are basic with no studio effects added. This contributes perhaps to the rough edges.

Totally, love the intimate nature of the Deben collection of recordings. Theres a nice article about his travels here https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/who-is-deben-bhattacharya-ethn...

Jody do you have a physical copy of this record?

No, I've never seen or heard it before.

That explains the "retro" sound. :)

I'd love to hear more of these recordings. I didn't know they existed before now. Going to read that article. Thanks Chris.

This oud player is also on the cover of the "Music of Syria" from the same collection so I don't know. The tombak player would hint that he's playing Iranian music though. No idea why he'd be on both album covers, unless he's Kurdish Syrian?

Glad you like it Navid, the first track is a Tar solo in Homayoon that i've listened to hundreds of times and learned to play most of by ear. It's so good, theres a wild feeling to it. Lots of striking all the strings at once, which is harsh since they're tuned FA-koron, GG, CC
