In Most of the World, Old Films Were Sped Up 4% for TV Broadcast

In most of the world, old films were sped up by about 4% for TV broadcast. This has to do with a conversion from 24fps film stock to 25fps PAL and SECAM video analog systems. Not only is motion faster, audio pitch increases by about 4% or .7 semitones.

While this is not directly related to ouds, I think it might interest a lot of you, since old films are a big source of old music. It's possible that some film companies or TV Networks have digitally fixed it, but that's not likely from my experience. Bottom line, you shouldn't put a whole lot of faith in speed and pitch of the songs in pre-digital films.

That is fascinating.

I heard Habeena habeen on your video, and I checked it on Spotify. The pitch is the same as the mazzika clip, but the spotify version is actually a bit slower even...

I wonder what's going on.

Pitch is the same but tempo different? Hmm. That's really unusual. Of course that can only be done digitally after the fact.

I will say there's a terrible version of Hibeena on the "25 ans deja" version, which is a big remix of Farid's songs, with extra percussion and strings. And for whatever reason, maybe to keep the mix on the same key, they decided to lower the pitch of Hibeena by a whole step!

In any case, I feel this is the ultimate Hibeena video, my third stab at the song: https://youtu.be/I1pCZp_yNm4

Hibeena was actually the first "HQ" video I ever made 4 years ago, replacing film sound with CD sound. I've always known the films were sped up by 4% but never understood exactly why.
