Very interesting, what would the tuning be fro that single string? This is equivalent to Ff ouds commonly tuned GAdgcf but for turkish ouds.

I'm going to guess it was single strung not because it was better than a double course but because there was only one available tuning peg and a single hole in the bridge. Some early 20th century Turkish-made ouds had the (single) bass course closest to the floor. This feature was present in the Turkish-made ouds played by the Iraqi students of Targan (?erif Muhiddin Hayder) If an Armenian-American player wanted to put on a high-tuned "cheater" string, and had such an oud, one strategy would be to move the strings around so that the lowest course was towards the ceiling or sky, just like guitar or other kinds of ouds, and in that single-hole position put a high *g* string.
