Hi Oudplayer,
Most ebony pegs, even the ones that sell in sets of four, (just did a web search -- picked first site) for $16.75. Then, the pegs must be fitted to
your instrument. So that's 50.25 just for the pegs, bummer.

I've gotten many pegs at 1$ (standard quality - no problems) each here:

Any pegs you buy will need to be fitted. Your pegbox will need to be reamed to fit the taper of the pegs. You can't just buy pegs and insert.
People often post of tuning problems. Well fitted pegs will solve most all them.

No, sanding will not taper the hole, which is the first step. The peg shank can be sanded to fit the hole after the hole is reamed to the proper
taper. You can also use a peg shaper which cuts the peg exactly the same taper as the hole. Reamers cost from $25-$80, shapers about the same. You can
make a shaper, but the reamer is a machined tool.
I suggest using viola pegs which are larger in diameter than the usual oud pegs. This will allow you to ream the holes larger without filling and
re-drilling them (install bushings). Violin pegs are smaller in diameter and will require installing bushings.

Hi,
International Violin (above) has viola-sized peg reamers. You can also get them at http://www.stewmac.com but they're a lot more money.
