My second step

Hello to everybody!

A musician passing by Israel brought this Turkish style oud to me. It does not have visible label and I do not know if the manufacture is Israeli or Turkish. The action is much more low than mine of Syria ( http://www.mikeouds.com/messageboard/viewthread.php?tid=2118 ) and has much resonance.

It has a build in pick up. The first time that I proved it, did not work! Pulling the jack I saw that the cables were wrongly tied. After inverting the wiring the pick up worked, although I do prefer the natural sound.

What does it seems to you?

Come on, guys. Do you really think that is a $100 oud? It does not look like it to me. Nice tight grain on the face. The craftsmanship, from what we can see, looks good. Look even at the purfling strips around the central rosette. Nothing sloppy there, which is an area that can be a bit off even on relatively expensive ouds. And, to me, it does not sound like a $100 tourist oud. It's hard to get a sense of these things just with a couple of pictures and a sound file, but it doesn't look bad to me.
The lack of a label makes you question things a bit, though. Looks Turkish.

Friends: Thanks for your opinions. After being suffering during months ‘a fake Fadel’ or an authentic oud of 100 dollars (with an high action, a horrible peg box and a bare sound) to prove this oud Turk-Israeli has been a resurrection to me: the strings are at the right height, the pegs turns smoothly and the wood resonates maintaining the sound.

Naturally, it is an oud of mass production, but to be played, not for decoration. The soundboard is without varnishing and, as Jonathan says, it has very good aspect: the veins are very regular. The fingerboard seems rosewood and the bowl seems mahogany. When the wood is not very good usually is coloured to disguise it, and in this oud the only part painted is the bridge. I do not believe either that it is common to install pickups in tourist’s ouds.

It is not worth the trouble to discuss if it worth 100 or 300 $ (in Madrid 100$ is what you pay to spend one night in a decent hotel). I am very happy with it, and I believe that they will pass two or three years until I need something better.

Regards.
