Dear friends,

This week's lesson is Samai Nahawand of Cheikh Derwish. I find it really nice but some how difficult. the most difficult for me is that I don't even know how it "sounds"

Could any body help? Thanks you

Feyfnou,

You can find a recording of this piece on the CD "Wasla d'Alep: Chants traditionnels de Syrie" featuring the Syrian singer Sabri Moudallal (on the French Inedit label). This is a pretty sama'i, although not much recorded outside Syria. Shaykh Ali al-Darwish was one of the great masters of Arab traditional music. He received some of his musical training in Istanbul, and taught music for many years in Syria and Tunisia. He is the one who provided Rodolphe d'Erlanger the sample taqsims in 114 maqams published in volume 5 of his work "La musique arabe" (he played them for d'Erlanger on the nay).
