I think that this is where I got the shelf idea from. I see your point, Dr. Oud, but I think if you are worried about seismic activity, it is more exposed, and susceptible, in the stand.

some exerpts:

-NOT!
"For the cases where the pegs get stuck, it is not correct to apply materials such as lead, powder, soap, pastel crayons and/or lubricants. In such situations, the best thing to do would be to take it back to the manufacturer. "
-yea, right!
"Ud should also be protected from moisture and kept in a dry place where humidity is at a high level. "
-huh? I though dry meant low humidity.
I think some translation errors may have snuck in. Then there's a picture of an oud laying face up, leaning on the pegbox on a bench.
As for leaving the case open - it woldn't provide much protection that way. Unless your case is airtight (I doubt it) the humidity inside will be the same as the room.

It's a translation, so I am guessing it is not that perfect, but I think that statement meant that if humiidity levels are high in your area, keep the oud in a dry place.
And I don't think that the picture is there to show how an oud is supposed to be stored--it is just a picture of an oud.
The advice not to apply a bunch of junk to the pegs is probably sound advice for the novice.
And, I am guessing (although I could be wrong), that he is telling people not to sand the face with sand paper, and just clean it/wipe it with a cloth, because he goes to great lengths earlier to discuss that nothing is to be applied to the face. Probably a translation problem there, although the words used in that one statement are unfortunate.

Doc O,

What hilarious observations!

I keep my oud (the only one I have right now) on a guitar stand in my den. Other than my 2-year-old nephew carrying it off once in a while (it's my "utility" oud, so I'm not so worried) it never suffers any damage. I guess if you want ultimate protection, keep it in a hard case. I like to look at the oud when not playing it though, so I'm planning on making a dedicated wood and glass panel cabinet for storage, with a mirror in the back to show off the oud on all sides. Excellent protection AND viewability.

I think there are drawbacks to both shelves and stands. Personally, I like the shelves (with the block under the bottom of the oud as the doctor noted). It's beautiful, they are away from feet, and the shelf above them protects them.
If there is an earthquake, yeah, I guess all the shelves could fall down, but, if they were in the stands, they would get debris falling on them. I undertand doc's points. I just like the shelves.
Jameel, your idea sounds stunning. You have to post a pic of that when you make it.

Sounds GREAT .. Syrian Ouds have a real good sound ,but still i like the Shehata sound better .

But i really can not say how impressed I am with the sound of the Shehata Ouds .It has a soft clear sound . where it is very hard to describe.

You just got this oud, and now you are selling it on ebay? Or is the one on ebay just like this? It looks very nice.
