Weigh Your Oud
It's been said that a quality oud (or any instrument for that matter) should be built as light as possible. So out of curiosity I weighed my ouds.
Please share your weights.

This is interesting topic. I woud like to ask you ... how did you weigh your ouds .. I mean what sort of scale have you used please.?

I have a small kitchen scale I used. A bathroom scale might work, but at that small weight would not be very accurate. A postal scale would also work.

Neat idea, Jameel! It might be interesting to note the type of woods used, too.

Salaaam Ya Jameel,
My Maurice Pallisander/Ebony oud is heavier than the walnut Syrian oud I had. I can assure you that the Maurice oud is far superior in terms of
quality.
Don't you think that we should add another parameter in addition to weight?
Maybe it was a valid claim in the good old days because almost all ouds were made of walnut.

I think you would have to consider the pegs as part of the instrument. Stings? I guess not; however, the weight of the stings themselves is
negligible.
I weighed four different sets: La Bella (Turkish), La Bella (Arabic, 11 string set), D’Addario (Turkish), and Aquila (Turkish). None of the sets
measured more than half and ounce—the La Bella’s were closer to a quarter of an ounce.
I had some crappy pegs laying around—wood unknown, but most likely balsa, or something similar—and these came in about an ounce and three
quarters. If someone had a set on ebony or rosewood pegs, I’d be interested in seeing how much those weighed.

How about... a database of different member ouds.
information on: maker, weight, woods used, yes!
and how about a sound sample if possible?
even if its just like a simple scale. It might give us an idea of how these informations relate to what type of sound is produced.

Samir, That's a great idea. I'd be willing to make a website for it. I think I'll post a thread about it.
