Wound Strings

Hey everyone. I have a quick question, and I know there are a ton of string experts here to help me out. On my oud, I have tuned to CFADGC, where CFAD are all wound strings (FAD are doubled), and GC are treble strings. For some reason, only 3 months after I've put the new strings on, the winding has begun to come off of one of my D strings. This just so happens to be where my fingers press. Could it be that I'm pressing too hard? I'm not exactly sure how to solve this problem.

The strings are Pyramid strings. And now, since the winding began to come off, I noticed that the string buzzes all the time. Is this due to the winding coming off, or is my whole oud coming apart?

Thanks in advance, people.

Hello ,

I had this problem happening to me, I believe it is due to either we get too emotional while we play and without notice we seem to over use the sliding technique or we generate some kind of salty sweat which eats away the string. I noticed that nylon strings do not get affected as much. did that make any sense?

Makes perfect sense. Kind of sad though. I'm not gonna wear gloves when I play to block the sweat. I play for hours at a time, so it's bound to happen... now, how do we fix it?

No man, your oud isn't falling apart. It may be from vibrato (when you rock your finger back and forth, I know you like Farid, so you probably do this a lot).

I had this problem with LaBella, after 3 months, I had to change my "d" string, when all other strings were perfectly fine. Were you using Pyramid "Orange", by any chance? I used Pyramid Super Oud, and I those wound strings are very durable, they never showed any signs of the winding coming off. I don't know about other Pyramid sets. One thing though, Pyramid Super Oud's nylon strings are too thick, at least for my oud. I had to use the nylons from LaBella's arabic set.

Sydeny made a good point about sweat, it can eat away your strings. After you're done playing, wipe off the neck with a paper towel. This will prolong the life of your strings. I started doing this with my new strings, since I always seem to get green crud growing on them after a few months.

Good luck!

Hello fine people,

Australian market is limited when it comes to strings brands. I could only buy an italian brand called "Galli" they can be found there http://www.bmusic.com.au/prod2055.htm
for every one to see what I am talking about.

As far as the green crud, all I can put it down to is that the skin that comes off our finger tips while we play gets build up on the strings and dies. the effect of salty sweat can not be denied too. How about a soft brush along the fingers board after every time we hug our oud? I guess that will keep it sweet. a cotton rag after that can also do magic.

lovely talking to you fine people.

guys, i don't own any stock in pyramid or anything, but i personally prefer them. they last longer for me, and don't go out of tune as much as the labella's. i've had some bad strings come from labella unfortunately, though pyramids might be too 'fat' for some people's playing. it's all personal preference i guess.

but strings wear down, that's just a natural thing. i wouldn't worry about it too much.
