Malaysian Wood

Wood are one of Malaysia's main export, so when comes to making musical instruments, there are abundant of beautiful Exotic wood to select from.

A light hard wood with air dry density of about 700kg/m3. Its grain ranges from straight streaky brown to curly figures. It produces a warm and balanced tone similar to Mahogany.

A light hardwood with interlocking grain, density is about 700kg/m3. Colour ranges from yellow to golden orange. Snake scale like effect if wood are well quater sawn and swirly grain figures when slab cut. Characteristic similar to ash with tight bright tones and good sustains.

Straight grain with density of about 400kg/m3. Creamy to light golden brown with a very fine and silky texture. Similar to cedar and has been used from pianos to guitars by many manufacturers since the 60's.

Wood has an aromatic scent with beautiful aesthetic grain figures. 'Eyelets' are common with fine wavy grain, colour ranges from golden amber to maroon. This wood is famous for its burls known as Amboyna Burls or 'King of the Burls' is one of the most sought after for high end furnitures or front panels of expensive cars. Long sustain with clear ringing highs and deep bottom.

Also known as Borneo Rosewood with a density of about 800kg/m3. Its colour ranges from orange red to blood red with bands of darker almost black streaks. Relative to the Cocobolo and Bolivian Rosewood , excellent sweet tone and good clear sustain.

Density is about 600kg/m3 and its grain interlocking, colour is golden amber with dark streaks. Figures can be very wild especially near the bottom part of the tree , Tone characteristics similar to mahogany.

This is the most popular wood after the Brazilian Rosewood for guitars. Its density is about 1.2kg/m3 and beside its beauty it is very easy to work on however the dust can be 'spicy' and irritating so cautions should be taken like using face mask with filter when sanding the wood.

A geniune Ebony wood with a density of 1000kg/m3. A close relative to the Macassar Ebony, streaky to jet black with very distinct sapwood seperation. This wood which is native to Malaysia was introduced by Luthier Jeffrey Yong and its results as a new tonewood has been getting very popular in the luthiery communities. Its grain figures can be more interesting than the BR and its tonal clarity is like the African Blackwood. It has tight interlocking grain .
