Help please, am I looking for an oud or cumbus?
I am having trouble deciding between buying an oud or a cumbus. I want to have the deep, mellow sounds but also to be able to play bouzouki style
lead, which is a bit hard to do on my saz - it seems to work best when playing rhythmic drones and melodies, not fast trilly embelishments. By the way
the reason I don't want a bouzouki is because I want an instrument that can play quarter notes.
I thought the cumbus is a good compromise between these two different approaches (the deep and mellow vs. the fast buzzy), but having read what people
say about it here I am not sure, it seems maybe like I will regret it (I haven't played one myself yet). Maybe I can't get it all in one instrument?
Also, if there are any israelis here, what is a recommended price for an oud? I'd like to buy second hand, though the shop in jaffa (chitori) seems
more trust-worthy.

well i just came back from israel and you should go to the shuk pishpushim
(something like that ) in jaffa and they have alot of ouds and kannons cumbus ect really good prices
you should go check it out i think you will find what u wan t
if you need more in fio let me know

I've been to the shuk hapishpeshim ("flea market"), most of the instruments I saw didn't look very high quality. I talked to some guy who is selling
an Elias Jubran oud which I might get, or maybe from someone else who is a little cheaper. I think I will not get the cumbus.

theres also a good shop in Bethlehem, it is next door to the DHL shop on the new street near the old city. Havent been there since they build the
wall, but last time I was there the owner had many good quality makers and price ranges.

I would suggest contacting the main oud players in Israel and Palestine to ask their opinions and ask if they know of any decent used ouds for
sale.
You can get Taiseer Elias' (Palestinian-Israeli from the Galilee) e-mail address by looking up the web page of Bar Ilan University's Music Dept. (look
under Faculty & Staff). Yair Dalal's (Iraqi-Jewish-Israeli) e-mail and phone number are available through his web site: http://www.yairdalal.com/ Samer Totah's (Palestinian in Ramallah) e-mail and phone number are posted on his web page: http://www.samertotah.com/ Between them, they probably know every Arab and Jew who plays decent oud in Israel and Palestine (and beyond!). (I
have communicated with them and have found them all very helpful.)
In my experiece, good quality ouds are rather hard to come by in Israel and Palestine, and I doubt you'll find too many people wanting to sell off
their good-quality instruments. If you are serious about oud and have some time, I would contact Jubran, the oud builder in Nazareth, and buy one of
his (I phoned him in 2000 and he told me he takes about a month to build one).

Thanks for the replies. I contacted an ex student of Elias Jubran who is selling an oud that Elias built, I've heard it and really liked the sound. I
am buying it tomorrow, gettin excited..
