I wrote the guy about it, and he said it is completely original. I didn't know Karibyan put on the covering on the face (not the mizraplek, but that
other thing). Hopefully, it will go to a good home. I need better pictures of it, in case one of you are the winner.

That "other thing" looks a bit too shiny to be original.

I will not put up Barcus-Berry on oud top.
If it is me, I will be installed right under the bridge in oud.
Though it is reluctant no matter what I say now to it.
By the way, how about the quality of this Karibyan?

Hi Mitsugu,
My opinion on the quality of the oud -- it looks like its in pretty good shape, the top could be original. Of course as others have mentioned, the
pickguard is not original, and neither is the armrest.
The top could be original, it doesn't look to new. The pegs look good, and from the kind of far away photos, the pegbox/neck joint looks okay.
Hate the way the pickup is mounted, but then again, there's no accounting for taste.
Either the photos of the back have some nasty reflections, or there's some goofy looking scrapes on the back...again, this might just be artifiacts of
the pics.
So -- all this said we have no idea how it sounds. If I ended up with the oud -- I would have the pickguard and armrest removed -- the pickguard
because of its damping properties, and the armrest because Onnik never put sweat protectors on his ouds. Have a traditional oval pickguard of some
nice thin material installed.
Lastly ask the seller who the original owner was. This could tell you a lot. Good luck, if the oud's in decent shape, it's worth owning.

The seller says that he is the original owner, and that it is original. I am not bidding on it, I just wanted some info for my website.
That central rosette is different than others that I have seen from this time period. Similar, but does not look the same as Karibyan's usual
rosette. Most of you have more experience than I do here, but every Karibyan rose from this period that I have seen has been exactly (EXACTLY) like
this:

It's no big deal. I'm just trying to learn as much about Karibian and his ouds as I can. In my limited experience, all of his ouds from this time
period had the rosette pattern shown below. The exact same rosettes. In fact, that is a photograph of another 1967. But, the date is not a biggie.
Any Karibian from the 1960's seems to have the exact same pattern.
The central rose on the one being sold is different.
In the end, though, no big deal. If the rest of the oud is original, great. And, again, my experience here is minimal. For all I know, that is
another one of Karibian's patterns that I just have not seen.
Merjanian's look almost identical--I am guessing he might have been patterning them after Karibian's, but I don't know.

Thanks for pointing out this oud guys. I gave it a little try, but after a few bids I realized I can't afford something like this now (and if it is
as it looks, it deserves a good selling price). It seems nobody met the reserve this time around anyway.
You know, it always boggles my mind why a player would sell an instrument like this in the first place. But, I'm sure there's usually a good reason.
I've sold plenty of instruments to help with rent or whatever, though I have never owned something like this.

Actually, Andy, that seemed like a drawback to me. There are so many east coast players that love Karibians, that I wondered why it would end up on
ebay.
Unless he wanted a very very high price.
