I'm trying to get a rough estimate of how much it would cost to ship an oud in a soft case in a large box inside the USA. I know a lot of you have sold or shipped ouds. It would probably be shipped UPS

It depends on the type of transport and the shipping company's rate and they do differ. Generally, Ground Shipment costs about $50, air around $130. You can get quotes from any shipper on-line. Be warned that Ground Shipment is the most risky for damage as the carton is transferred many many times, often with fork lifts and a carboard carton usually won't survive very long transport. If you ship ground, pack it in a wooden crate of at least 1/4 inch plywood with 2x2 reinforcement along all corners and some posts near the center, nailed with screw nails or grip nail or screws. If you go by air, get a double wall cardboard carton with corner reinforcement. The oud shoud be unstrung or with the strings loose, and packed so there is no movement at all, with bubble wrap preferred over styafoam pellets as they can shift around. It's best if the oud is in a case, and the case packed in a carton or crate. The oud should not be loose in the case either. Get insurance and save all your receipts in case you need to make a claim later. You can save some money by taking the package to a shipping center rather than home pickup or some mailbox store.

Thanks a lot, this is really helpful. Good tips on shipping ouds. I hear of so many people getting ouds that are broken or damaged.
