I went to two concerts of the tel-aviv oud festival, the first night was "perach adom" (red flower), a group from jerusalem that plays rembetika covers and some originals. They were not the tightest musicians I've ever heard but I guess not all original rebetes were either. Regardless, they were very very good (though the araq helped raise our spirits), their female singer constantly sent chills down my spine. It would of been nice to hear the interplay between the oud and bouzouki instead of one guy switching between them though. A really special performance, I will definately go up to jerusalem to see them play sometime.

The second night was suppoed to be a tribute to the old arabic movies they used to show on tv here on friday evenings, when I was younger. Too bad I was too young for it back then... These guys were very good musicians, they played Farid al-Atrache, Abdel Wahab, etc. I thought their version of Azize was a bit disappointing but everything else was very good and authentic.

On the whole, rembetika is "easier" and even lighter to listen to (musically it is not demanding to hear or play, though the subjects and mood are very dark and heavy), you hear it in your stomach, the music on the second night was a bit more from the head and the spirit, not the guts. Different, but both very good and right in their own context.
