Rast in Blue mp3 - TEMPTATION !!
It is more a temptation than an experiment, It may be considered a crime for some tastes, but when early bluesmen were bending and squeezing their
guitar strings they were may be looking for the ancient sound of those quarter notes burried in their collective memory.
Rast and a bit of saba seemed as a good start for a blues but maybe other maqams can work.
What do you think guys? are you tempted?
Let us hear your Bluesy maqam of the month.

It is a great idea. It opens vast fields for creation.
Did yoy read this article before having the idea ??

Anthropologist defines "ethnie" as the result of the mixing of two previous ones....same as doing oud today is.
Very tempting indeed

Thank you Zalzal for this great article, no I didn't read it and it is very interesting to see that "the oriental roots of jazz" is a scientific
reality not only an Afro-american myth.
I believe that oud can really speak many languages.
Many may disagree, but I've always felt that the "Adhan" (the mosquee call for prayer) is a very bluesy melody.
Are we going to hear some Blues from you soon Zalzal ?

Better fm a good musician like Ziyad Sahhab who plays kind of bluesy oud in this song (with a female singer)

Very nice diversion Zalzal but you will not get away. I am still waiting for your bluesy maqam.
In fact Ziad Sahab is one of the most politically and artistically engaged artists of his generation, one from Sheikh Imam school, I know that he
started playing oud when he was 5-6 year old and at the age of 13 he played oud in the opera of Cairo but he refused to take the easy way and he is
following a very engaged and experimental path, he was playing in a very nice pub 2 weeks ago.
I am not encouraging anyone to come to Beirut, but the bright side of the bad political and economical situation is that great artists are playing in
unusual places, we are having some great concerts with the new group formed by Charbel Rouhana (OUD), Abboud El Saadi (Bass) and Arthur Satian
(keyboard - http://www.arthursatian.com ) three of the best musicians in Lebanon (Arthur is from Armenia)
they were playing at Nova last sunday (where vodka is good and cheap and they have a great sound system) It was a Charbel Rouhana You'll never see in
a concert hall the guys kept improvising and challenging each others, Abboud was giving Charbel incredible Basslines and Charbel was doing takassim
mixing complex modulations from the traditional maqams to pure jazz. the next time I will take a camera with me (if charbel accepts) I will post you a
video

Charbel Rouhana is also part of the newly released CD of Toufic Farroukh - Tootya but I still find that "Ali on Broadway" is still Farroukh best
album. attached is an extract from "Ali on Broadway" with Rouhana on oud
