Oud Woods: PADUK and MAHOGONY?
What kind of wood is Paduk?
And Mahogony?
There's a new oud being sold whose back is made of those two woods... and it's like about $900... the fingerboard and pegs are made of
ebony...
Is that worth the price? I thought mahogony isn't all that, and paduk I've never heard of...
[It's from Cankaya Music...the guy there said he makes not only Turkish Ouds but also Arabic style Ouds... anyways... ]

Actually, I've played on ouds that have that combination to them. In my opinion, padouk sounds very nice. I also have mahogany on my Fathi Amin
oud, and it sounds very very nice.

Hi. Those are both very good and very commonly used woods for ouds. I have a great oud with mahogany and walnut ribs.
Mahogany can be a light brown wood, and paduk is red.
Cankaya usually makes quality instruments, just watch out for extra customs costs when it's shipped.
Are you looking for a beginner's oud or something more advanced?

I'm looking for an advanced instrument. I don't know what that means to you, but to me... it means like not more than $1000... that's
already breakin' the bank. I love the oud so much, I'm going to have to drastically alter the way I eat so that I can afford this thing...
I'm in the process of trying to get the same thing that Roy got... i don't know if you noticed his post about the Mourice Shehata Oud het
got with the help of the nile shop... I'm Egyptian, love Egypt, and would love to have a nice instrument made in Egypt, especially by Mourice...
To tell you the truth, I can't imagine a more perfect-to-my-taste Oud than the one that Roy got... man... Rosewood body, Ebony fingerboard and
pegs, Mourice Shehata as its builder... my goodness.. and it's face is beautiful.

Hi John,
I recommend Maurice's ouds very highly. Look at the pictures of my ouds. They are all Maurice's ouds. Where are you located currently?

Hey... I love Mourice Ouds... I agree with ya mike that they are awesome 
I've bought into the propoganda...
Hey ... I'm going to purchase the same Oud that Roy bought...
Here's the description:
The back made of Pleasanter Indian Rosewood & last stave is made from ebony ,
the finger board & the bridge & pegs are made of ebony .
the top is made of spruce... Mourice will not finish it but just give it one coat of [something] just to prevent it to get dirty from finger prints
So.. I'm getting this for $950 with a hard case and extra strings... What do you think guys... Mike?

John, it really comes down to you and how comfortable you are with spending money. I can tell you that you'll get one magnificient piece of work
from Shehata. I've played Mike's ebony ouds from Shehata (as well as the inlaid) and I gotta say that not only are the absolutely beautiful
(their pictures don't even compare to how they are in person), they sound truly amazing.

Hi John,
Here is another way to look at it as far as spending a little more than initially planned for. I bought my first oud from Istanbul for $300 US.
Then there was the cost of the hard case, the shipping, and in my case the extra cost of the exchange rate from US to Canadian dollars, and oh yes,
Canadian taxes. In the end I paid about $750 for a very average student model oud with no complexity to the sound. Now, for a few hundred more, I got
a great oud from one of the better contemporary oud builders, who is a second generation builder. I guess my enthusiasm for this oud is getting the
better of me; I'll shut up now, but here is one last picture. This one is of the head stock.

Pdouk and Mahagony woods
Dear Friends,
Yes,Padouk and Mahagony woods are good woods for ouds. But
there are more precious woods than Padouk and Mahagony.As my long experience on music instruments producing Juniper and Wenge woods are the best woods
for music instruments. Juniper wood is a light wood and has excellent sound performance.But to find this forest wood is very difficult. Wenge is a
black wood with brown dessins on it. Wenge also has excellent sound performance but heavier than sour cherry colored Juniper wood.I'll attach
photo of a Juniper and Wenge wooded oud-4 professional.
