I was waxing nostalgic a few days ago and came across some human beat box videos on youtube. When I was a kid, hip-hop was is in it's glory days (late
70's), and I was really into it. I quit listening when the lyrics got raunchy and un-original. Back then it was creative and fresh, with some crazy
new sounds that I really liked. I loved anything with scratching and beat box. Here are a couple good ones. These guys are amazing:
So as I was listening to this, it reminded me of a recording of Sunbati (sahran lee wahdi) where he stops singing and starts whistling along with his
oud. It's really interesting. So I was wondering if anyone has perhaps tried to duplicate the sound of the riq or derbukke or daf or whatever to
accompany themselves on the oud? That would quite interesting to do with perhaps a samai' or tahmila. I'm not brave enough, but I'd love to hear it
done.
