Finally worked out how to send multiple images to one subject heading. Forgive me for the trouble.

Here is my review.

First, the oud:

I used to own a Turunz concert model, and my experience with Turkish ouds has therefore been with one of the best. How does this oud by Yildirim from turkishouds.com compare? Well, very favourably indeed. It is beautifully made by a really first-rate luthier, with faultless craftsmanship. The action is very low (which I asked for) and easily playable. I have made a sound file and will attempt to attach it later. The instrument is difficult to describe in parts because it seems to be a harmonious whole. Neck, fingerboard, soundboard, tuning pegs, decoration, all seem 'just right'. I am very impressed. I expect the sound to improve with age and playing, but it already brings a smile to my ears (if that is possible!).

The company: I know that Todd had some difficulty due to a broken neck in transit. No problems here, thankfully. The case is first rate. The company manager, Gokce, has been extremely helpful at every stage. I've rarely had an online purchase go so smoothly. Ten out of ten!

These seem to be new ouds on the international market, and I know that a few of you are wondering about them. All I can say is that I have a wonderful oud at a very good price, and I look forward to spending many joyful hours with it.

Mood: what?

[*] posted on 3-22-2007 at 09:48 AM

molto bello ... lovely do-dad on the fingerboard extension ... a caprice?

face looks as if it's got a really tight grain. what does it sound like and - simply out of curiosity - why did you opt for a turkish style oud as opposed to one from north-africa or arabia?

very intresting oud on turkishouds.com sight with 4, diamond shaped sound holes in the face. can't enlarge it, alas.

I've placed the sound file - mistakes included - on my webpages. Direct link:
http://www.rmguitar.info/oudsounnd.htm

Why Turkish style? Just the oud music I'm most familiar with. Heroes: Necati Celik and Yurdal Tokan.

Here is a photo of an identical back - I don't have a camera, and the photos I uploaded were sent to me by Gokce. The photo of the back I got from their website.

Hello there

Looks and sounds great - what kind of price did you pay (if you don't mind me asking) and what model is it.

Enjoy your oud

They only seem to have one model, but different degrees of decoration and different choices of woods. Mine has a wenge bowl, and is the mid-price one. If you are interested in one, contact Gokce at turkishouds.com, as prices in Turkey do vary a lot on a regular basis.

I've played it more now, and already the sound is growing rounder as the strings settle. I think it is the equal of the Turunz. Both great instruments.

Something I didn't notice earlier: there is a rubber cover around one of the strings up in the pegbox, to stop the wound strings from scraping against one another. Subtle and useful.

Another thing: I was told it would take '40 days' from my order date to delivery. How long did it take? Exactly 40 days!!

The motif on the fingerboard is a tulip. All ouds by Yildirim seem to have this. The Turks have a long and fascinating history with the tulip, as do the Dutch, involving colossal amounts of money for one single flower, espionage and murder.

The decoration is all in abalone, and is beautifully done. This oud has quickly become my favourite out of the many I have tried and owned.

I only wish I could play it as it deserves to be played. I've just listened to my soundfile through computer speakers, and it does not sound anywhere near as good as the oud. I hope I haven't done them an injustice.

Back to playing...:airguitar:

Thanks Mourad. I've been playing guitars and lutes for many years (see website http://www.rmguitar.info) but my oud playing has been only a little here, a little there. I feel I have a lot to learn, but now have an instrument which inspires me to practice.

Cheers,

Rob
