oudmaker list
would anyone care to compile a list of all current/past oudmakers of note for those of us not so well-versed in this area. the list could be
organized by country and include oud type, contact info. (incl. address), price range and perhaps some kind of ranking of quality, etc. this could be
a work in progress with different people adding to it. (maybe i should also request, out of courtesy to everyone, that the individual oudmakers
themselves not reply to this post with advertisements only for themselves). a lot of this information can actually already be found throughout the
posts but needs someone to put it all together. i'd especially like a good exhaustive list for each of egypt, syria, lebanon, greece, turkey,
and iraq.
while i'm at it, a different question: the unkapani district of istanbul has numerous instrument shops. which are the best ones? do they always
try to cheat you, especially if you're a foreigner? in general is it always better to go to the oudmaker directly to buy? many of them, faruk
turunz, eraydin, dimitris, najarian, sell directly, so why even bother going to a shop?
also, has anyone heard of a turkish oudmaker named engin erogluer (sp?)?

I would like to offer my support of the oud builder list. Sorry that I don't have any knowledge to offer, but I would love to learn about the
many builders.

Dear friend,
I think that this is the son of Hadi Usta in Istanbul,as for the other question,I also agree with you that the best way is to get from the
oudmaker....
The problem is that some oudmakers as Dimitris here in Greece they work alone,so you have to wait some months, because you get in the list and they
keep an order for the clients-friends that they want to purchase an oud.....
Some oudmakers want not to make a quantity production but a quality, and that is what I personally ask for....

The list is long, I do know many oud makers in Arabia
Egypt:
Mourad Al Turky, mourice shehata, Sayed fathi Amin......etc
Syria, Ibrahim Sukkar, the Khalifa family
Lebanon, Nazih Ghadban
These are the new oud makers, they all are able to make good ouds.
The generation before that,
Badrosyan In Syria
Fathi Amin, Farouk Shehata and Badr In Egypt.
Usta Ali in Iraq
You can find their ouds.
The old generation, i.e the great masters are:
Nahat in Syria.
Al Johary, Al lathy, Raflaa Razi and Jamil Georgy in Egypt
But the old generation ouds are not available any more.
I did not talk about Bashir type oud as I do know nothing about these instruments.
As for Turkey, Greece and Armenia, I think our friends here will be able to help.
Salamat,
Adel
