Taking the Oud on stage [Europe]

Hey everyone,

I was wondering, suppose I ever get good enough to take the oud on stage, where to do so...

I mean, how on earth do you get gigs when you play an aeon-old instrument in a world full of computer-generated music (which by the way, I make too, so no offense meant there)?

The obvious answer is, you mix those styles. Fair enough, but suppose I'd like to play nice, traditional taqsims on nice, traditional old maqams. What to do?

I live in the Netherlands where the music scene mainly consists of hard rock bands. Maybe some festivals? I don't know.

What do you, fellow Europeans do? Travel to the Mediterranean or to the Middle East? Tell me!

hello arsene

i life in germany exactly in bavarya an area known for his beer-culture and horrable brass-music.
i dit different live projekts in the past with oud in a reggae-band and a trip-hop, ambience, drum&bass project as well.
and now i play classical arabic and turkish music with
a classical turko/arabic group.
an to my surprice the (german)people here like the tratitional way more than the electronic or rock- and reggae-mix becouse it is so exotic for them

most important thing is to play the right musical peaces not to slow and not to complicatet. and there are a lot of arab people in your country

so don't hasitade try out how it works in the NL
i'm shure there are so many gigs for you to play

good luck
mourad

It's true there probably are lots of opportunities... I'm just not sure where to look, I guess!

But first, I need to actually be able to play :D

Hey Arsene,
You should get in touch with Haytham Safia. http://www.haythamsafia.com
He is a fantastic Palestinian oud player who is now based in Holland.
Best,
Mike
