Believe me,I do it daily......it's wonderfull. This is the magic world of the oud.....

The oud is a musical instrument and not a piece of furnature. I never heard people say that italian made violins or violas are ugly. to me at least the beauty of an oud is in it's sound I don't care how it looks

The Bashir Style oud has a unique history and philosophy and it takes more than your average Joe Blow to appreciate it. Its a particualr path in which the oud has progressed through a specific artist with a specific way of thinking, and chain of influeneces. Its just..... different. To call it ugly, is to show limited understanding and ignorance.

This is a bashir style oud which I put together in a montage. I hope to get Nazih Ghadban to build it for me one day :)

Melbourne- that is a lovely oud, even if only a montage. May it become a reality for you soon. I also hope to have a Bashir style oud one day in the future, a man can't ever have enough ouds, heh? :)

I'm not ignorant of the evolution of the Bashir-style oud. I love Munir and the sound of the oud. I just think it's ugly, in purely aesthetic terms.

This is another oud I pieced together. Not a bashir :D but again simplicity and the minimalist approach is the order of the day, I guess these are some of the reasons why I like the bashir oud. This one is definitely going ahead in the coming months, and of course its going to be a Shehata oud; but the design may change a little :)

Hi
If we get to it from an esthetical point of view, i think that the bashir-styled oud matches many oud players who like its curves and its big "caisse de resonance".
But anyway it is a matter of taste, I can't blame anyone because he doesn't like what i like, non folks?

hey thx moderator for resizing, it happened with the first image and I thought that it somehow shrinks down overnight! I'll resize accordingly in future postings ;)

I love the way a Bashir oud looks. I love the way a Manol looks, a Najarian, a Rapakousios, a Turunz, a Ghadban, a Nahat. They're all beautiful. Even the funkiest home-built horror is beautiful because it is an oud. An oud is more than an instrument, at least to most of us it is. And if you see it only as an instrument or a piece of furniture to use only for show, well I don't know. You'll change your mind once you play a great Bashir style oud.

hey Melbourne.
thats some wicked photo montage.
one thing I would sugest though is for the shehata you should use his curvy brige. Its a lot nicer imo.

Thanks Samir....

If I told you how many different versions I've done of my ideal shehata oud you'll think I'm nuts!! But yeah I'll take your advice and strip in a curvey bridge! I call it the moustache bridge - ever since I first saw a shehata oud! I'll post a pic of the result some time during the week :)

I have tried my oud teacher's munir bashir's oud and I think the sound is absolutely amazing and thats the important. after all some cheap ouds may look beautiful but they might almost be just for decoration... ( as i have seen some).some of munir bashir's songs are based on meditation.. so what the point of having a magnificient looking oud if hes tring to get people to forget about all and just listen to the sound..
