Musical Mixture

I played a festival yesterday with a rather eclectic group that we put together only ten days ago.
The photo below (taken from video unfortunately) shows me (oud) with Paul Santiago (guitar synths), Jorge Rico (Moceño) and Francis Gilfedder (harmonic singing and about to play slide didgeridoo). Francis and Jorge each play a raft of wind and stringed instruments.

A really interesting mix and we had great fun.

Regards,

Greg

Hi Greg- looks like you guys had a good jam- that's one nice thing I like about the oud, it is adaptable to playing all types of music if you are willing to have a go at it. just yestersday I was playing oud with a 2 guys on guitar, one regular acoustic and the other on bottleneck Hindi slide, also with a singer and we tried to put together a Bollywood sort of song and it was a lot of fun, and sounded just fine.

Hi Matthew, I don't think you would call this a jam. We had several rehearsals, during which we composed and arranged the pieces. The Queensland Multicultural Music Festival attracts more than 45,000 people, so they expect a high standard.

Regards,

Greg

Wow.
World music consciousness is on the rise, big time! I've never seen a Moceño before.. I bet it sounds a lot like the Fujara though! Amazing how the Slovaks and the Andean people can have almost the same idea on the other side of the world.
Congratulations on your concert, Greg!
And your jam, too Matthew! Just a few years ago I first heard the "Mohan veena" (another name for the Hindi slide guitar..that one invented by Vishwa Mohan Bhatt) and now there you are in the UK having an oud/Bollywood-style jam.
Incidentally Vishwa Mohan Bhatt made an album with Simon Shaheen called "Saltanah", I highly recommend it.

yeah rebetostar, world music has been on the rise for a while now, and the oud is definitely part of it. through the different forms of world media networks, the internet with world musical instrument stores, other global communication networks, myspace, the coming and going and mixing of musicians from all countries, cultures and backgrounds it's possible to find all types of musical combinations happening and anything is possible. I'll have to check out that Shamma/Bhatt Cd, that must be good listening!
