Saba

I've been working on this maqam as of late. I really love the feeling it evokes but I also find it very challenging. It seems like it leads my ears somewhere new everytime I sit down with it

Does anyone have any nice pieces or taqsim from players I could listen to get some ideas from? I think I have a Munir Bashir piece in Saba somewhere. I'm going to try to dig that out

Check out this video I took of Adel in Lyon last year. This was after we finished a nice bottle of red wine and a lovely dinner cooked by his beautiful wife and sisters-in-law. I have more of these videos, but here's a nice Saba Taqsim on his Fathi Amin oud.

Taqsim Saba - Adel Salameh

What I love about Adel is he doesn't use politics or silly track titles to sell his music. He lets his music speaks for itself.

Here's another Saba Taqsim by the great oudplayer and composer, Qasabji.

Taqsim Saba - Mohamed el-Qasabji

Don't forget about Afif. This was from the night we had when Jameel visited a few summers ago.

Great stuff Mike... I especially like Afif's playing. While it's light years ahead of what I see myself ever playing I find his taqsim easy to follow and great for learning

Nice sensitivity of play and kind photos. You and Afif have both started a new oudfashion?:D

Hey Mike, thanks for posting the Saba taqsims!
Must be something in the air Jason; I was just trying to get to grips with this elusive and beautiful maqam myself, and lo and behold here are some very useful examples of how to work through this maqam. Afif's take is awesome.
Maybe we ought to follow Mikes and Adel's example and pop open a bottle of bordeaux to help! ;)
