Alf Leila Wa Leila - Raíces concert footage
Hi,
I posted a clip from a concert we did last November, called "Raíces: a Journey through the roots of Flamenco", in which we played an arrangement of
Umm Kulthum's "Alf Leila Wa Leila" (1001 nights). Belly dance choreography and solo by Dafne Canales-Lees of Calgary's Arabia Adorned dancers.
I couldn't find a version of this song with oud on it, so I basically just doubled the singer, plus a taqsim at the beginning. I'm playing electric
oud, so the tone is different from an acoustic oud. Plus I'm still learning :-)
I appreciate your feedback. Here's the clip:

Wow,
I'm honored by your speechlessness, friends!
But really, I can take constructive criticism..

Thank you sammy!
I've been trying to listen from the perspective of the oud players, and I wish I had been able to use an acoustic oud for that one. The electric was
practical in terms of volume in the theatre, but maybe the tone's not quite right for this piece.
Question for the Arabic speakers among you: How do you find Annette's singing? I know she's a little pitchy in places (She produced the concert,
danced in 5 pieces, and sang in Greek, Arabic, and Spanish, so I cut her some slack), but do you find the language in the singing sounds natural or
does it have a Canadian accent? Annette's half Greek and half Palestinian, I believe. She's been in Canada quite a long time.
Thanks again!

well her singing is all right really if you consider that its a rather hard piece to sing. Obviously there is better in the arab world but its
important to keep the traditional music alive so keep it up.
Keep it up Ben,
your doing good!
But like you said acoustic oud would have been better.
I think that you learned the piece well enough and I liked the way you played it. you where the most solid of your band mattes for that day.
Your Taqassim however was very western sounding. I think if you just keep listening to the masters you will get there though. keep us posted.
