Free Concert in Brooklyn This Friday

Hey Everyone,

I'm playing a free concert in Park Slope, Brooklyn this Friday June 13 at 8 pm. So if you're in the New York area and you're not going to Mav's show on the same night (at Alwan for the Arts) you should come out to the Old Stone House for my show ;)

Did I mention it's free? We'll play some classic Arabic tunes and some of my own compositions. here are the details:

Arabic Music in Brooklyn

Featuring: Brian Prunka (oud), Zafer Tawil (violin), Danny Zanker (bass), Mark Katsaounis (percussion)

Performing Classic & Modern Arabic Music

Friday, June 13, 8 p.m.

at the Old Stone House
5th Avenue
btw 3rd and 4th Streets (336 3rd St)
Brooklyn, NY 11215
F or R to Fourth Avenue, or R to Union Street

Admission is free

This event is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by the Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC). Additional funding was provided by Group 3 Architects and private donors.

About the music/musicians:

Brian Prunka is a Brooklyn-based composer/oud player/jazz guitarist. He has been fortunate to both study and perform with the renowned Palestinian oud/violin virtuoso Simon Shaheen through the United States and elsewhere, sharing the stage with such respected musicians as Michel Merhej, Billy Drewes, and Jamey Haddad, and Bassam Saba. He has also performed with a number of jazz and world artists, such as Michael Bates, Ravish Momin, Beth Cohen, Elizabeth Ayyoub, and Sami Abu Shumays.

Zafer Tawil is a Palestinian multi-instrumentalist. While best known for his outstanding percussion work with musicians like Simon Shaheen, the Brooklyn-based Jerusalem native is also a phenomenal oud player and violinist. This concert presents a rare chance to hear Tawil's superb Arabic violin playing on a variety of classic and new music.

Danny Zanker spent his formative years in Israel, England and Texas. A fluid bassist and enterprising composer, he has performed around New York with his own group (Anti-Elevator Mission) as well as various other projects (such as Travis Sullivan's Bjorkestra). Of late, he's become one of the premier bassists in New York for playing Arabic-oriented music, showing a keen affinity for microtones and other Arabic subtleties, and performs with Amir El-Saffar, Tareq Abboushi's Shusmo, and the Ayyoub Drummers.

Mark Katsaounis has studied extensively with frame drum master Glen Velez, and is currently working with several musical groups including the Glen Velez Frame Drum Ensemble, Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas and Ethos Percussion Group. He is a flexible player with an organic approach to a variety of drums, such as the Arab riq and bendir.

Here's a video from a previous concert:

Trinity Concert

it's a slightly different configuration, but it'll give you an idea.

Hope to see you there, make sure to introduce yourself . . . I'll be the guy with the oud ;)
