Basic Oud questions - Need help!

Hello,
I recently acquired an Oud and know nothing about other then I really like the sound and the music a lot.

It needed strings so I ordered a set of 3 Pyramids Superior. After receiving them I looked at sites like the Oud Cafe for help and was shocked to find out how many tunings there are.

So my problem here is I have no idea what tuning to use nor how to know which will match my set of strings.

In addition I am not sure what kind of Oud I have, Turkish or Arabic etc. How can I tell this and is this important to know?

Hopefully these are very basic questions and someone can help me.

This is the string set description for what I have:

"3 Pyramids" brand Oud string set includes 11 strings in 5 envelopes.

Single String Plain Nylon .020;

Course #: two stirrings, approx. 34 inches long: Nylon wound Nylon .035 ;

Course #2 two strings, approximately 34 inches long: Nylon wound Nylon .040 ;

Course #3 One string approximately 71 inches long, must be cut to accommodate the 2-string course: Copper Alloy wound Nylon .030 ;

Course #4 one string approximately 71 inches long, must be cut to accommodate the 2-string course: Copper Alloy Wound Nylon .035 ;

Course #5 one string approximately 71 inches long, must be cut to accommodate the 2-string course: Copper Alloy Wound Nylon .040

Thanks in advance,
Norbet

Tell us how long the distance from the nut to the bridge is. And post a picture if you can. Then throw those strings in the garbage. They are a knock-off of a good brand (German-made Pyramid brand), and are most likely fishing line.

Thanks Jameel,
The length of the string when measured from nut to bridge is 24 1/2 "

Here is a photo of the front of the Oud.

Besides being of poor quality, are the strings usable at all? What struck me at first was the Single String Plain Nylon .020.

I can not figure out from any of the tunings where this thing string should go... (besides the trash...). Is there really a purpose to this string?

Thanks again,
Norbet
