What does this mean?


I was looking at an oud method book Here and didn't know what the numbers above the notes meant. I'm 'guessing' they are to tell you what fingers to play with... do I have that right?

Yes, that's what they mean . . . this appears to be an exercise in playing in the second position (first finger is a whole step above the open string).
