Yes animals reflect the pure beauty of our world, so much that they have no need of music! even though my dogs like listening to the oud.

One of the reasons that I took up the oud in 1997 was my dear cat Woody (now departed). When I played guitar, Woody would run away. When I played the oud, he would curl up right next to me and fall asleep. My band used to rehearse in my living room. I have a wonderful photo of Woody fast asleep in our violinist's lap in the middle of a rehearsal. I think some cats like the resonance of the oud and the tonality of Near Eastern music.

I attaching a photo I love. It was taken in Israel.

Salaam/Shalom/Shlama/Khoda Hafez,
John

It is a really wonderful and moving video. Even too much so - I was first sceptical if the story could be true at all. It is - search "Christian the lion" in Wikipedia for more information.

I love and own both dogs and cats, but I think after seeing this I will have even more respect for my cats than before... I would not have believed a "wild" feline would behave like that!

PS: Brave guys! "Do not try this at home"... ahem... in the wild!

Thanks Mike for pointing this out. Made a warm feeling.

I thought that the video couldn't be real also, I mean, why would those guys stand there without protection in case the Lion didn't actually remember them? "I'm sure they tasted familiar!!" :D

But I have noticed, that when I play my Oud for longer than 20 minutes continuously, a lot of seagulls (I live by the sea) sit on the roof opposite the house and stare at me through my window!! Bit scary at times! ;)

John,
My cat Leonardo likes to listen to me play the oud too... The dogs don't seem to mind it, but Leo really seems to like the sound....

Must be something to it... They say the Prophet (PBUH) loved his cat too... I read this story but I'm sure it's from a Hadith or not. If someone would confirm that would be great... "When call to prayers was announced Muezza (the cat) was asleep on one of the sleeves of the Prophet's robes. The Prophet wanted to wear the robe to go to prayers. Rather than disturb Muezza Mohammed cut off the sleeve to leave Muezza in peace."

My cat prefered the santur. When I played she would sit in front of me and watch, and when I finished a piece she'd say "meow". She'd sleep on my santur when I wasn't home, and on my feet at night. When she died (@ 15 yrs) I was a mess for weeks. I miss that stupid cat.

great video Mike. I've sent it around the office (people know I don't actually WORK here) and everyone's crying. Three of us, including myself, are Leos celebrating birthdays this month so it's timely!! Yea, Leos!

So to continue the thread, which makes this whole posting kosher for Mike's Ouds and not just some sweet irrelevancy, one of my cats runs out of the house when I play my oud (especially Arabic, he's more tolerant of Turkish) and his brother runs in to listen. The one who hates oud like guitar very much. Viva la difference......
