Turunz oud strings

Hello everyone, i own a Faruk Turunz oud made for arabic tuning, i was wondering if you had any suggestions as to what strings to use for optimal sound. I believe the oud is currently strung with Kurshner strings, they are good, but the trebles don't sound as good as the wound strings. I am ready to try pyramid lute strings; any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Hello Hamed,

I use standard tension Aquila Nylgut Arabic strings on my Faruk Türünz Arabic oud. I found the standard gauge Aquila's had a little too much tension on an oud of 60 cm stringlength, but they seem just right to me at 58.5 cm. stringlength and I am very happy with the sound and balance.
If your oud has a longer stringlength, you may be better off with the low tension set.

Regards,

Greg

Hello Hamed,

Ive tried a few different brands on my Turunz oud (including Kurshner), but funnily enough I find that the normal Pyramid Arabic set (with the Orange cover) work best on my oud. My oud, however is 61.5 string length. Gregs oud which I think is 60cm sounded great with aquila nylgut also.

You can compare here:

My oud: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7etDp94r10

Gregs oud: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdr-ShQ8KIc

Hope this is a help...Best wishes,

That's the same length as my Faruk oud with the standard tension Aquila Arabic set.

Thanks Greg, i'll give the Aquilas a try. I used them in the past on a floating bridge oud and wasn't amazed, but that was a different oud of lower quality! I've heard good things about pyramid lute, they seem to be the gold standard from the talk on the forum, have you tried these on the Turunz.

Hi Hamed,

I have not tried the Pyramid Lute strings on the Faruk oud. I have been so happy with the Aquilas that I haven't tried anything else (other than the Kurschners that were fitted at time of delivery).
A couple of years ago, I purchased several matched sets of Pyramid Lute strings and fitted them to a Nazih Ghadban floating bridge oud. They were very nice strings, but the wound strings were very easily damaged (a big consideration given the price I had to pay for them).

Regards,

Greg
