Nahawand

Hi guys, I haven't posted anything in a while, but I was just fooling around with apple's garage band and thought I'd post a little nahawand improvisation.

I'm actually pretty impressed with garage band. It's not super flexible, but the stuff that it can do seems pretty well designed.

I used the zoom h4 recorder as a usb microphone.

Hi Brian,

Lovely playing, cool sounding Oud, and pretty decent mics and converters in that H4.
Thanks for posting.

Thanks, guys, I'm glad you liked it.

Samir, this is the oud I got from Najib--the old Syrian one from the 1920s.

Paul, I've been pretty amazed at the recordings I've been able to get with the H4. It's remarkable what you can do these days with a tiny $300 machine.

Hello Brian

I really enjoyed that - really fresh beautifully played. Could you tell me hoe you recorded this, what mics did you use. I've been thinking of getting a zoom H4 (and christmas is looming!!!). Did you record in your studio and how much work did you have to do on Garage Band.

Thanks my friend

Hey Leon, I just used the built-in mics on the H4. I didn't do anything in garageband except add a little reverb and fade out the end. I was just recording in my bedroom, not a "studio".

That was a really great taqsim! :applause:

I was thinking about getting a Edirol R-09HR after Thanksgiving. The sound quality of the clip is amazing and I'm wondering if I could expect the same from the Edirol.

Hello Brian

I am really impressed with the sound quality (your playing is great so that really helps big time, I don't expect a mic to improve my playing haha) and have been looking at someof these small units just to be able to make musical sketches and notes more than anything and to listen to my playing more carefully. I am thinking either the zoom H2 which I have heard good things about, or zoom H4. Have you tried the zoom H2?

Aside from this what I really liked about your playing was that it is really contemporary but honours the tradition and unique phrasing of the oud - you're moving forward with your own voice and this is really nice to hear.

Have a good weekend

Leon

You guys are too kind.

Leon, I haven't tried the H2. It has some features that the H4 doesn't (like surround sound recording), and the H4 has some features the H2 doesn't (like the ability to use any external mic you want). The H2 is a little less expensive. I don't imagine that the sound quality is all that different. I would compare the features and see what appeals to you more.

cjmichael, I think the Edirol is pretty similar. Some people think it is a little better than the H4, I don't know. It does seem a little more solidly constructed, but lacks some of the H4's features, I think. A friend of mine has one, I'll see if I can borrow it and post something so you can compare.

cheers,
Brian
