I would love to know about this - I am a yoga teacher and practitioner (amongst other things) and have heard about this - I know they have this in Iran also. I have also begun to notice shifts in my 'subtle energy' as I listen to different maqams, now Iam becomeig more atuned to the music.

Thanks

Leon

He has a VAST number of CDs available, each one in a different makam and arranged for therapeutic purposes.

I found them rather variable in listenability, but maybe I just didn't have the right diseases.

He's an endearingly batty character.

It's an eyeopener visiting a mediaeval Islamic hospital, designed for this sort of therapy. The one in Kayseri is very well restored and documented. There are some large courtyards, but off those there are lots of small treatment rooms. Each would hold a small group of patients being played the same makam.

I recommend the Oruç Güvenç CD, "Ocean of Remembrance," which is very repetitive for close listening, but turned out to be PERFECT music for rocking my son to sleep when he was a baby. I hope I permanently imprinted him and warped him...in a good way!

Peace,
John

I find this very interesting indeed.
I work in the field of arts- and music therapy myself (mainly with autistic people), and I'm always amazed by the 'healing powers' of music.
Since I started playing the oud I have incorporated it more and more into my sessions, and the gentle and soothing sounds of the oud seem to do wonders for some of my clients.
I see myself as a very down-to-earth guy and I'm always very sceptical when it comes to 'supernatural' and 'esoterical' phenomens, but I believe that beautiful sounds can really change people's perceptions. And what better instrument than the oud is there for these purposes?
