Ussak/Beyati Semai experiment
Hi everyone,
I havent posted anything for a long time, I just got back from Istanbul where I was working with one of my teachers, Osman Nuri Ozpekel for a few
weeks. While on my free time there I composed this Ussak/Beyati Semai as an experiment as I have never composed in the form before. THIS IS NOT
MEANT TO BE PROFESSIONAL...Just a try at the form even though I have a lot to learn about modulation and comp. form, etc. This is a rough recording
just to get the melodic ideas down, and I know there are some rhtymic issues in there, but just for fun I wanted to share and get some feedback on the
ideas. Happy New Year to everyone and all the best regards,
Amos

Lovely playing Amos, you have a very nice oriental sensibility even a little Persian/Iranian creeping in?? about halfway through (reminded me of
Behroozi-nia), and a little Armenian towards the end!!!
BTW great sounding oud - I really enjoyed it, thanks for posting - run with it my friend
Happy New Year

Thanks guys for the positive feedback, its much appreciated...i know i have much work to do to authenticate the form, etc. but i really enjoyed
working on the piece. i just finished a Huseyni semai, i will post it soon...
ararat, definitely there is an armenian influence in my playing, as my first and greatest teacher was armenian, the late al bardezbanian...im glad you
could hear that influence.
the oud is from izmir and refurbished by peter kyvelos. it has quite a punch when played in turkish tuning, ive always liked the sound.
thanks again and i iwll post the huseyni semai soon when i am brave enough...
happy new year to all,
amos

Hi Amos
You were lucky to have such a teacher ... what I like is that you you have your own sound not just a copy of Udi Bardezbanian. He was a wonderful and
very distinct player and would be very proud of your distinct playing I'm sure.
Best wishes for this year
Leon

Amos- really good playing there mate! I'd call it professional!
I agree with Leon, wish I could have studied with the teachers you have had! I also went to your myspace site, very impressive stuff there as well.
best wishes, MW

Your playing is great and this semai is really well inspirated.
It is a beautiful composition that you have made.
Hope you will share more with us.
Do you have all the rythm in head when you compose, or do you help by writing the notes or composing with a percussionist ?

Hi Suz-i-dil,
Thank you for the compliment, I appreciate it very much. I do not compose with a percussionist, I compose along the lines of the usul (iqaa). I'm
really glad you liked this semai, and thank you for your comment.
All the best regards,
Amos
