I didn't like it at all !! With all my respect to your opinion Hama..
He is showing off and playing as fast as he can.. but couldn't impress me at all. If speed is all he got then
Plus he is really banging on the oud!! It's the first time I hear about him and I don't want to judge from my first listening to him but it was really
disappointing.. Im sorry

There are so many oud players and their amazing performances I love, but this play here does not attract me at all.
I am not a professional oudist nor critic, so I don't know if my feeling is wrong or not, but at least to my ears, some of his play sounds to have
some incorrectness in notes and rythms.
I thought while watching this part, "Why doesn't he slow down and play more accurately?"
Especially in the fast part (of Farido's taqsim?) he does not play each note properly is spite of the fast speed. And obviously out-of-tune note in
”Aranjuez".
I think this is fatal flaw as a professional musician.
If my opinion sounds arrogant, I am sorry.
I want to know specialist's opinions.

From a professional point of view - yes it is rough (or has some very rough spots). But still there is a kind of Rock'n'Roll energy there which in one
way is exciting and attractive. Parts of it I like a lot - parts of it not at all.

I agree. I do feel some kind of "rock" type energy here.
and one of the reasons is the tone of his oud. I don't know if this tone is result of recording equipment or condition or not, but it has some
"distortion" type tone and that makes it exciting.
In rock field there are lots of this type of guitarist whose rough play is one of his/her attractiveness.
However, I cannot get excited to this type of play in oud music.
I think this is just my taste...

Finally got a chance to listen to the entire solo. The guy has talent no doubt, but his playing (at least this solo) is pretty bombastic. Also, any
oud player who takes on even snippets of Concierto de Aranjuez is going to be measured against the finest classical and flamenco guitarists both past
and present. Not my cup of tea, although I would like to hear some other things from Haj just to see if this is his "standard" style.
Regards...Paul

I first heard about him 15 years ago in morocco on my very first pilgramage to "oudland". At that time I had no idea really WHERE I should go to get
an idea about oudism... I thought any arab or islamic country would be equally fine. I had no idea.....
I was majorly disappointed in morocco and on top of that I didn't have to selfconfidence to even really MEET the good players I had heard about there.
I had heard that there was a good oud maker named Khalid (Belhaiba) and by chance in Fez I met Nouaman Lahlou (who is supposed to be morocco's musical
embassador to Cairo). He "helped" me out a bit. He reconfirmed for me the mistaken notion that a makam is just a scale and that all you needed to
know was that correct "phone number" (numbers of the notes) and then you are free. So after that I though "well what is the point of studying
further?".
Anyhow, he took me to Khalid's workshop and I eventually managed to get 2 good ouds (another amazing story).
I had also heard of Said Chraibi and Khalid said he could set up a meeting for us, but I was too shy and avoided it. I was VERY new to Arab music and
wanted to really KNOW something before meeting great oud players.
I also at this time heard about HAJ YOUNIS who was supposedly the "other" very good moroccan oudi, who taught at the conservatory. I found one
cassette by him and it sounded quite like this youtube clips... very RnR

Said Chrabi and Khalid Belhaiba are very good friends, I have met them several times and I have never had the chance to talk to them about Haj
Youness. I guess lot of comments here are right about his way of playing.
I would like to post a sound file from Said chraibi (suleimane album) to show the difference but the file is too big (13 mb). played on Khalid
belhaiba oud. very clear , clean and beautiful sound

salam ya shabab
now it is time to tell you something
you are so wrong when you are classify haj younass only on that taqasim
first of all the sound of that recording is so bad (maybe a copy of a copy...)
most arabic television chanels have still that bad sound (distortion)
i saw haj younass many times in moroccain television. and i had the chance to met him personally in 2000 in his office. first of all he is a realy
incredible player and he is not only playing this kind of style like in the video. i have seen a realy nice taqasim of HY last year in 2M Maroc
Television. It has different kinds of speed and silence inside many slow parts and so much feeling.
he is a very famos personality in morocco. becouse of his outstanding playing 8NOT ONLY IN HIGH SPEED)
and a real gentleman.
so don't blame this man if you only know this recording
its a big mistake
best regards
