Please help me pick a Oud in Cairo

I'm in Cairo and would like to buy a good Oud that will stay with me over the years. I've been playing for a year. My budget is 500-800$, willing to buy second hand.

I've been to Muhammad Ali street. Most shops seem to sell cheap Ouds. Can someone please recommend a place where I can find high quality Ouds or maybe someone who sells second hand Ouds? I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm also looking for a good Oud instructor, someone who has the right methodology and who can actually teach with high standards. I play Jazz guitar so I have good grasp of music theory, although I do realize that the oriental modes are different.

Thanks a bunch!

Hey

The neck is made of rosewood. The body has an ebony contour (the darkest color that you can see on the photo) but is mostly rosewood as well if I recall well (I'm not a Oud expert so I can't tell :S). It cost 5500 LE (about 1000 dollars)

Good luck in your search!

Yes there were ready made Ouds, not many though in a set price range. In total there was about 20 ready made Ouds, but ranging from 3000EP up to more than 10,000.

Hi Naddad,

Where did you find your oud? When I was in Cairo I just bought one in Muhammad Ali Street, that wasn't too expensive. (I had to learn to play, am still beginning.) So it was OK at the time, but I think it might have structural problems. If I go back, where do I look?
Thanks,
Kiki
P.S. As your post says, the hardest thing in Cairo is to get information. Do you have a sound clip?
