Istanbul: Where to shop for instruments
Hello,
I am visiting Istanbul at the end of the month and will be looking for a couple good Turkish instruments to bring back home. Maybe a good student
Turkish Oud, a better long Baglama and interested in seeing other instruments.
Can anyone recommend some shops, makers or neighborhoods to check instruments?
Cheers,

hi rubabplayer
Just came back from Istanbul, there are so many shops there you will be overwelmed.
the main area of music shops is in Istiqlal Street, if you start from TAkseem square , and wak towards the other end of istqlal street about 15-20
minutes walk from TAksem square , there are quiet afew shops sell almost every Musical Instrument you name it (good and bad of course), one thing
you need to be aware of is bargaining , start from at least half of the price you been quoted and you will be surprised,
I bought myself a Cembus for £60 and Ney £6, they where asking for double of that .
there are some shops in Aksaray on teh main road, and sultanahmet but the main ones are on Istiqlal street
best of luck

Merhaba
İstiklal caddesinin sonu Galip dede caddesi üzerinde muzik mağazaları var. kule dibine kadar her türlü muzik aleti orada
bulabilirsiniz.beş dakika ileride unkapanı köprüsünden sonra yine muzik mağazaları bulabilirsiniz.
iyi şanslar.

Hi Hama,
Thanks for your post. I will check it out.
Did you see many other ethnic instruments from other countries? I have heard that some Persian and Central Asian instruments show up in shops in
Istanbul too.
I hope to find a good student level Tanbur. I love this instrument as it sounds like a mix of Oud, Divan and a couple other distant lute cousins.
But may be tricky to bring home.
About Ouds. What should I expect to pay for a good quality entry level instrument. I am unlikely to make Oud a priority since I am mostly focused on
Rubab and Setar. But would love a good instrument to explore Oud with.

hi Rubab player
there was Tar, setar, Tanbur,Naey, Dudek, Balaban , Zorna, Saz, kamancha, qanoon, santoor, daf, zarb, darbuka you name it you will find. , first just
browse around the shops and check for prices before making any decision,
dont try to buy any think from shops in Grandbazar, they are more touristic and expensive stuff.
for beginner oud they have from 500 TL to 1000 TL ( $300-US$ 600 )
most instruments i found was in Istiqlal street most of the shops are close together as well.
examples of what you can find there

Thanks for these great suggestions Hama. Looks wonderful. I hope to spend a lot of time wandering around the shops and checking instruments.
Tukish viagra? What on earth are those? Does not look like something anyone would put in one's mouth.

Hi!
IF you go to Istanbul, don't forget to visit ALì Nisadir shop\ It's a luthier who always have something ready to sell\ you can find very nice ouds
for 500 euro, everything hand made.
Unfortunately I don't remember the address\ It is not in Galip Dede caddesi.
He's in a large commercial road where there are other shops (also one of Sandi)\ his shop is invisible and very difficult to find.
I hope someone here will remember the address!
He's really worth a visit\ he has the best ouds you can find for 500, 600 or 700 euro.
He doesn't speak any english but he is very nice!
Also, in Galip Dede caddesi, visit TOPRAK shop\ they are extremely kind and they can help you to get Turunz and other famous luthiers ouds for very
good price\
Say that "Daniele from sicily" sent you there (:
Good luck
Daniele
