Oud in Canada - ebay and customs fees

Hey people.

I'm new to the fantastic world of ouds and I'm currently looking at a few ouds on the internet. Many are available on ebay and I'm wondering if some of you bought some from international sellers and had a good/bad experience.

Also, I live in Canada and I'm wondering what the deal is with the Customs and what they charge for importing an oud.

Any help will be apreciated

peace

Depending on your budget, it may be a good idea to deal directly with an oud maker rather than with a resseler.
I don't know the situation for Canada, but I had a bad experience with custom in France, who charged me 20% of the price of the instrument...more the charge for DHL shipping, it was making enough money to go pick it myself moreover a visit of Istanbul.
I learned after those custom fees were systematic with DHL or other private company...but sometimes with national post they don't charge, because of less controls. Anyawy national post may be less safe for an oud than private companies.

15 percent my friend... It sucks,
there is a lot of debate but if you decide to buy, make sure they ship it (from the states) with USPS not DHL and FEDEX, because I have heard horror stories with 30% handling and customs..
Or just buy a oud in Canada. From private sellers, and you dont pay taxes..
There are some ways to get slightly around the customs issues....

You can try to have sent as a gift with a 50$ to 100$ value, this way you'll save $$.
