books? methods? lessons?

Hey guys,

I'm a professional (jazz)guitar player and just bought an oud. I fell in love with it's sound because of the music of Dhafer Youssef, Amos Hoffman and Anouar Brahem.
Since I'm quite new to arabic music, what would be the best and quickest way to learn the instrument? Are there any books/methods (in english) to learn the basics? I found some lessons on youtube about playing some maqam's, and some more beginners lessons, but I'm curious about your tips and ideas.

Because I'm a guitarplayer, i will probably tune the oud a bit like a guitar (with a low F#), otherwise I will get confused. :) Are there other players who tune it like this?

Thanks for your tips!

There is no need to tune the oud like a guitar. If you are a professional jazz guitarist it is easy to learn the oud in the standard tuning and more practical if you intend to learn about the traditional music. I was also a professional jazz guitarist prior to learning oud and it took me about one week to adjust to the oud.

Your biggest initial issues will likely be learning the risha (pick) technique and the intonation of the various microtonal pitches.

The best and quickest way to learn the instrument is to find a good teacher.
If you tell us where you are located, someone can likely assist you in that.

Hi henkdrunen

Here a big list of oud methods :

About tuning, i play with this special arabic one : CEAdgc.
Easy to understand because there is same part of guitar tuning "EAdg" ...
