Turkish tuning on an Arabic oud with a Spesific string?
Hi guys,
I have just discovered this forum during my google search and became a member. I realized that there are lots of expert people here and wanted to try
my luck. Please forgive me for asking a question at the day that i became a member.
But Grateful if you please advise me about the issue..
I have been playing Turkish oud for two years with Turkish tuning. No problem here. But, 2 weeks later I will probably visit Cairo. I'm willing to buy
an Egyptian oud. A friend from Egypt will accompany me. I really love the warm sound of the Arabic ouds, but i am used to play with Turkish tuning.
I have read a lot at here and at other sites about avoiding to tune Arabic ouds to Turkish tuning for the sake of not to damage the bridge or the
complete oud. So I am in a hesitation whether it will work..
Now, the question. Is it possible to tune an 61,5 cm Arabic oud to Turkish C# F# B E A D with a spesific string set?
Or, Is it possible to find an 58,5 cm Arabic oud? I mean do they produce that lenght.
I do not have much knowledge about string types, gauges vs.. I am using traditional La Bella Turkish tune OU80.
Thank you in advance and regards to all members,

Have you noticed that Turkish ney (flute) comes in many different sizes and that consequently the same fingering produces lower and higher pitches? it
can be the same for oud. If you want to play Turkish music on a Arabic oud using your familiar tuning, just use the regular Arabic (C tuning) strings
that are already on the oud (or the same LaBella set you use for Turkish music) and tune
B E A D G C
it's your familiar Turkish tuning, one step low. The oud is safe, the sound is good. The four high courses are the same as Arabic tuning. the two
lower courses are each a half step low. that's not enough of a difference to need different string. the regular La Bella OU 80 string should sound
just as good slightly lowered.
This is really no problem. There is one problem: finding a quality oud in Cairo. Good luck.

If you use a turkish string set which is calculated for a 58,5 scale on your 61,5 cm scale the tension will raise by around .5 Kg per string. And if
you tune up an arabic set to turkish tuning you will have .3 Kg more tension for every half note. Both will be definitively too much and I would say
even one of this option also.
It will be always the best option to look for an indivitual set for an individual situation. If you like to get a proposual, you can contact me
