Hossein Alizadeh Masterclass

I had the opportunity to join in on a Tar Masterclass lead by Hossein Alizadeh here in Vancouver. He's here for a concert with Barbat player Hossein Behroozinia. It was a special moment for me because growing up the music I listened to the most was Alizadeh's. And to date, it is the repertoire I'm most familiar with. He's a copious composer. I had a feeling I wouldn't get too much out of it being an Oud player, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to learn something from him.

If you've never heard Alizadeh's compositions before then I recommend listening to this. It will seriously blow your mind.

What I learned

As for the masterclass, the learned about his teaching style more than anything. I didn't expect to learn much being that Alizadeh plays Tar, not Oud. But I didn't pick up on some his musicality.

When you get something wrong, he points it out immediately so that you correct it.

The teaching style is totally didactic. He plays a short phrase and everybody repeats it until they get it right (or somewhat right). We did this until we learned a whole pishdaramad. It was interesting. No sheet music whatsoever, everything was learned by ear.

He had everyone play a short bit and asked how long each person has been playing for.

He's quite direct and frank in his manner. He was very aware of each person's level and gave everyone pointers to take away.

Technique

His technique is incredible. He takes a simple melody and repeats it with different nuances to it that create something more profound.

Oud for Guitarists

This week I feature one of Hossein Alizadeh's pieces in the weekly video and talk about Persian music briefly. Please check it out, this piece has never been performed on Oud to my knowledge.
