Song of solidarity - Who's in?
I got this idea today.
Because of the crisis across Europe's borders and parts of the middle east right now you naturally want to say something about it. But instead of
ranting on facebook or Twitter I thought it would be a cool thing to do some sort of collaborative piece of music with people from different parts of
the world.
It's been done before but I think it's a good creative way of expressing concern and love to those affected by what is going on. The question is, how
could we do it?
One option is to have a song based around improvisation. I could record a simple drone-ish phrase on the Oud and send it to people who are interested
and have decent recording-equipment available and they would play individual solos or melodies on their instruments over it that could then be cut
into the song.
Obviously having just Ouds would sound strange so it would be great to have some other instruments involved. One could perhaps also shoot video of
themselves as they record their parts (on a crappy iPhone or whatever) and we could cut together a nice little video too.
Of course there are other ways of doing something like this, and I'm basically just brainstorming here. But does anyone else here maybe think it could
be a good idea to do something like this?

Mood: Dude, where's my Oud?

Count me in.
Let me suggest the key of A which is ideal for both Turkish and Arabic tuning.

That's a good idea. I'll try to come up with something nice.
I take it you'll play the Oud?

What a nice idea !!!
It would be quite awesome if we could get a few people together.
Maybe create a whole song + video where you can see the instruments played, that you hear. The video for example could start with a drummer followed
by other percussionists and so on cutted into one screen. If the solo part of the particular musician is over, the next one can follow.
Best regards
Hibari

I'm up for this. Oud ideally, though as per the other thread I have recently acquired a frame drum, though any rhythm on such would have to be quite
basic.

Yeah, I think it would be best if we find a few people who can drum the basic beat.
I will keep my eyes open.

I love that so many people seem interested
I have an idea for the base of the song. I'll try to record it on monday and maybe upload a demo of it and we'll take it from there?
Meanwhile, If you have any ideas feel free to present them.

I have run into a problem where the computer I use in the studio isn't working, which has prevented me from recording anything yet.
Will try to solve it as soon as I can.

Do any of you know a violinist? Or alternately a Kamancheh-player or similar?
I had an idea that the song starts with a shorter Taqsim on a violin-type instrument over a drone in A. After which the percussion enters followed by
the oud-players.

A friend of mine at uni is a violinist. I'm sure he'd be able to improv something in the natural/harmonic minor or the like. What maqam are you
thinking of for this piece?

So I FINALLY got the computer in the studio to work and was able to record a VERY rough recording of an idea I had.
Not sure the feel of it is right for this project but I'll post a link here and you can either confirm my suspicions or tell me if you think it's
something to build from.

Sorry about my lousy darbuka-playing. Hopefully we can find someone who is willing to do the percussion.
This is all assuming that you guys are even interested after all this time.
Let me know.

At first I thought this was a bit solemn but the more I think about it, the more it comes across as introspective. I think there's good leeway for
some creativity here, so I'll play around with some melodies this week.

Mourad, that's great
If you want you can try to record a rythm similar to the one I played but better. As long as it works with the melody, if that's the one we decide to
go with.
Also feel free to experiment with different rythms and changes as the song will probably focus on one player at a time, and it might get tiresome with
the same rythm throughout? I'm not sure, how do you guys think we should structure this?
Also, it would be fantastic if your friend wanted to play some Saz on it. You think he would be up for it?

The tempo is 150 bpm. I use Reason and sometimes I've noticed that the tempo doesn't carry over to other software for some reason. But it should be
150, or whatever you feel works best.
