The string spacing is determined by the angle of the neck/fingerboard and the string length. There is no standard string spacing since the string length and fingerboard dimensions are variable among oud designs. The spacing is the result of the 1st and last string positioned 2mm inside the edge of the fingerboard, and 2mm between each pair at the top nut and 3mm at the bridge. The spacing between the pairs is the result of a calculating the result of the neck width at the top nut minus the spacing between the pairs, divided by 5. The angle between the edges of the neck will determine the spread at the bridge.

Your illustration appears to be of a lute, not like any oud I've seen.

Hello there, nice to meet you! I'm a new to this forum, and a learner oud maker! Right now I'm about to complete my first turkish oud, and I need some information about the strings spacing, in order to be able to adjust the bridge and the nut...

In brief, the oud has 58.5cm scale with 20.5cm fretboard. The width of the fretboard is 37.5mm at the nut and 49mm at the junction. I also bought La Bella strings.

As I read above, the 1st and 11th string should have 2mm space from the edge fo the fretboard.
Also, a string of a pair should have distance of about 2mm with the string of the same pair.
So, knowing these, we calculate the spacing if the pairs.

My question is, do these dimensions refer to center-to-center measuring? Or it doesn't really matter?
Also, are these dimensions standard, or is there a range with minimum/maximum value?

e.g. 1.5mm or 1mm distance from the edge of the fretoard is acceptable?

Also, someone told me that the space between the strings of a pair should be around 0.7-1.0 mm (not center-to center), and someone else told me 2.0 mm, but I don't know which is the correct...

Nice again to meet you, and thanks to anyone that will help!
