Advices to remove Frozen Pegs ?
Hey everybody !
Due to high level of humidity the pegs of my friend's oud are frozen. It happened to me in Istanbul but I had the chance to have loads of
professionals around but this time it is not the case.
I remember that the craftsman hold the oud on his knees and removed the pegs, hitting them with a screwdriver and a hammer. I tried it at home but I
don't really know how to hold the instrument in a way to prevent the head to absorb the shocks.
Does somebody have some advices ?
Some photos or schematic drawings ?

Support the peg box on the top of your thigh while seated. Do not apply any strain on the neck. Then just tap the small end of the peg with a hammer
until it pops out. To avoid any local damage to other pegs use a short small diameter wooden dowel as a punch applied to the end of the peg while
hammering.
Do not try to twist a peg free because if the peg has not been correctly fitted the peg may break with a torsional failure. A correctly fitted peg is
one where the heaviest bearing friction load is carried by the thicker (peg head ) end of the shank - the thin end bearing surface being made a very
slightly looser fit so acting more like a guide for the peg shank.
I have not found it necessary to do this on instruments that I have made but in humid conditions a peg might be freed with the minimum of forcing by
carefully warming the affected area of the peg box using a hair drier at lowest heat setting

After getting the peg out, apply some peg dope , it will help avoid freezing the pegs. Just apply a thin line around the peg shank where it contacts
the peg box, not too much.

Thanks a lot for your advices ! Finally we didn't fix it but I guess these advices might be helpful nonetheless.
Hoping that my pegs will not freeze.
