Plain string for D
Hello dear members!
I ordered a long time ago some plain oud strings (nylgut) because i wanted to try to have a plain d
Can somebody tell me if the diameter 97 could fit for tuning it to d on a 58.5 cm oud?
If not what brand/diameter coukd be a good idea?
My first idea to do it is economic: the d string is always the first strings that breaks or dies earlier and the plain strings last a lot of time!
the other idea is that I like oldschool sound on oud and i thought it good make it
my question is : will i loose some volume?
Thanks a lot!

.97mm Nylgut is approximately equivalent to nylon .042in or 1.07mm. At 585mm it would be ~2.8Kg tension.
That's fairly light, tension-wise, but that is typical with a plain d course. On a 585mm oud, it is going to be challenging to get much higher
tensions with the plain d. You could go up to 1.0mm nylgut, that gets you to almost 3Kg tension.
PVF is much higher density, so you can get higher tensions. .91mm PVF gives you ~3.5Kg tension.

Hi Sto
I had good results with a gut string pair tuned to D ("arabic" tuning) on a 58,5 oud for a gut diameter of 1.04 mm.
So a tension theoritical of about 3,3 kg
by the way, I have a spare (cc gg dd) set of gut strings that i can sell you if you are interested, i am located in france.
Regards
Eric

Thanks eric for the proposal but i already tried gut on oud and i was not happy with it, too fragile and too sensitive to humidity changes
Brian : thanks for the info, i think i will try the string then and see whats happening
this pvf that you are talking about, which brand are they? how is the sound? the price? (a lot of questions...)
thanks!

Only Savarez has it in the higher gauges. I believe Pyramid's highest gauge is .87mm. Savarez goes up to .91 and .95mm. .87mm is OK but might be a
bit light for a short scale oud.
Simon Shaheen tried the .91mm on one of Farid el Atrash's old ouds and liked it. It sounds good and works well with nylon c' and g or PVF.
I'll have to check on the price, but it's not too bad. Savarez makes them double-length so you only have to buy one string, I think it's about $6.
