How do you learn how to play taqasim?
This is a subject that is difficult to articulate.
There are very few materials out there that teach taqasim.
There are not many study materials written on paper about taqasim.
For some Oud players, taqasim might eventually develop. For others, it takes some guess work, trial and error, and coaching.
How did you learn taqasim? When did things start to click?

I started playing Oud about 10 years ago having already played the guitar for over 30 years. The biggest break through for me came when I began
studying recordings, and I mean really hard study. For example; I pick a recording I love and play just 2 or 3 seconds of the Taqsim, then try play
the notes exact including decoration, attack, style etc. I repeat this process over and over but only with passages which turn me on. Eventually an
understanding forms, the path of an improvisation becomes understood. My own improvising then naturally seeks out a similar form. I'm still at it and
always will be. I was literally stuck with no progress until I made recordings my primary source for learning. I got absolutely nowhere using Arabic
music theory or scores after learning the basic notes of a given maqam. I think scores are good if you want to learn pieces or tunes but not for
improvisation.

The most helpful thing for me was very close listening to recordings, and actually transcribing (pencil to paper) without an instrument. Somehow this
process integrated the maqam in my aural imagination much more thoroughly than by trying to imitate it on the instrument.
Of course, I had many hours of study with teachers and have also spent a great deal of time copying phrases on the instrument as well. But this was
the practice that led to the biggest improvements.
