Learning Oud

Hi guys.
I have been learning Oud for 3 months now, and I want to ask you a question. Is it possible to play this song on Oud? Especially since Chords are why Guitar exists. Thank you very much.:airguitar:

Anything is possible, but it wouldn't be straightforward. In order to do western music on Oud you need to cut a lot of corners and adapt something in the piece to the strengths of the Oud.

You can sometimes to do chords on the Oud if they work and sound good. But you can also do partial chords, and bas lines or harmonize with your voice, or even follow the vocal melody with the Oud.

Any nay-sayers out there can just watch my cover of a john mayer song:

It's hard, and may not work for every song, but it's possible. But it is an advanced endeavour.

Keep on going!

:wavey::wavey: Well, I have to be a little cautious before I say my opinion as I also started playing musically rock'n'roll and metal on the guitar, but just decided to become psychotic musically and switched to the Arabic style oud. Today, I compose music from both worlds and try to find some good nice musical encounters, but when it comes to the oud, you have to remember that we're talking here about a melodic oriental instrument vs a harmonic western one (in that case a struming guitar). That's why it would be understandable to assume that the instrument would lose its essense -to some extent- in my opinion. But it's always nice to try something new.

Here's a video of me playing Soldier of Fortune by Deep Purple :xtreme::xtreme: on the Oud (At that time, having just relocated to Germany and couldn't afford to buy a guitar, otherwise, I'd play it on a guitar)

Another full instrumental cover of Everything I do I do it for you- Brian Adams where I tried to maintain the authenticity of the Oud with the other instruments. Even tried to add a Rast interlude somewhere to see how it sits :D

All the best!
