Where to go after a Turunz oud
Ten years ago I purchased Mr. Turunz’s entry level Arabic oud model with double soundboard for about $1300 (plus shipping and case). Now I’m
considering upgrading or adding another oud to my collection and would like to hear your thoughts about options and where you would go from here. I am
considering a seven course Arabic oud (tuned C to ff) (including by Turkish makers), and have a budget up to 3k. What makes sense to prioritize from a
quality of sound, playability, and longevity perspective? Or does quality taper and some point with the extra cash focused mainly on vanity aesthetics
(not criticizing but I want to know once that line is crossed)? Thank you

3K these days will get you something really nice in sound with simple but attractive aesthetics. I suggest you study instagram/youtube pages of
reputable makers like Hatef Shaterian, oud salon, Peter Sayegh, etc and see what sound profile fits your needs. I have a Shaterian oud that was custom
made to fit the sound profile I was after.

A bit unrelated, but are these entry level ouds still available from Turunz with a double soundboard? I ask because most of the ouds I've seen by
him
seem to have lots of ornamentation, something I don't really care about, and which I imagine must effect the price. I was wondering what his basic no
frills models
are like, and if the sound is similar to the more expensive models.
Thanks!

A good quality Oud shouldn't cost you more than 2000 USD. You can pay extra for ornaments, exotic woods and complimentary appointments but based on
your requirements 3K is more than enough to get you something to last you a lifetime.

That’s helpful. What are your thoughts on which components to focus on and specific makers?
